Activities and Impact

Supporting What Matters Through Words, Culture and the Body

At kototama, we create and nurture opportunities for people to discover and pursue what they truly wish to do and how they wish to live.

Our work currently centres on three areas.

Creating opportunities to encounter Japanese culture and traditional craftsmanship first-hand.
Drawing out the aspirations and values of artisans and organisations, and giving them a form that can be meaningfully communicated through the web and digital technology.
Creating opportunities for people to turn their attention to their own minds and bodies.

Though these activities may at first appear distinct, they share the same foundation: listening closely to thoughts and aspirations that have yet to find words, and enabling each person and each culture to bring forth their inherent strengths in a way that is uniquely their own.

Authentic Japanese Cultural Experiences at the Foot of Mount Fuji

Carrying Japanese Culture into the Future

Based at Lake Kawaguchi, at the foot of sacred Mount Fuji, we offer authentic cultural experiences through which participants can encounter Japanese culture and traditional craftsmanship first-hand.

These experiences are intended both for people in Japan wishing to rediscover their own culture and for international visitors to Mount Fuji who seek to understand not merely the outward beauty of Japanese culture, but also the history, values and spirit that lie within it.

What matters to us is not simply seeing a finished work or learning about culture as knowledge, but experiencing it through one’s own hands.

To touch the materials. To repeat the same movements. To notice the subtlest differences in scent and form.

Through these moments, we seek to convey not only technique, but also ways of engaging with the world that have been passed down through Japanese culture — an attentiveness to nature, to materials and to oneself.

The Representative Director leading this work has taught the art of incense-making to more than 30,000 people to date.

We approach incense-making not simply as the creation of something fragrant, but as a contemplative experience — a time to appreciate each scent, feel the materials in one’s hands, and turn one’s awareness towards the senses.

Supporting People and Organisations Through Web, IT & Digital Transformation

Giving Form to What Matters

For Japanese culture and traditional craftsmanship to be carried into the future, it is not enough for exceptional skills and experiences simply to exist. Their true value must also be conveyed clearly and meaningfully to those who seek them.

Yet the thoughts, values and skills held by artisans and cultural organisations do not always begin as something that can readily be put into words.

They may be unsure what it is that should be communicated.

What feels entirely natural and familiar to them may make it difficult to recognise where its distinctive value lies.

They may struggle to express the essence of their work through words or a website.

At kototama, we listen closely to these thoughts and values that have yet to find words. Through thoughtful dialogue, we uncover and clarify the essence of each activity.

We then give that essence tangible form through words, design, websites and thoughtful approaches to communication, helping it reach the people for whom it holds meaning.

For Japanese cultural experiences and related initiatives, we also provide support with website strategy and development, branding and marketing as part of our non-profit work to preserve, sustain and communicate Japanese culture for future generations.

We also support local businesses and non-profit organisations in making effective use of IT, and deliver talks and lectures primarily on IT, web and digital transformation.

Case Study 01 | Connecting Artisans Across Japan with International Travellers Seeking the Essence of Japanese Culture

Japonistique

Japonistique is a platform through which international visitors to Japan can discover and experience authentic cultural traditions passed down across the country, learning directly from the artisans who carry them forward.

Working with approximately fifteen artisans and organisations dedicated to Japanese culture and traditional craftsmanship across Japan, Japonistique offers cultural experiences at times that fit naturally around the artisans’ work and everyday lives.

Each experience is led by an artisan who has inherited and continues the tradition themselves.

kototama’s involvement extended beyond creating the website. We began by clarifying the purpose and value of the experiences themselves.

Beginning by Listening, One Artisan at a Time

Through thoughtful, ongoing dialogue, we uncovered the distinctive value held within skills and practices that, for the artisans themselves, have become a natural part of everyday life.

From defining the purpose and concept of each experience to copywriting, information architecture, branding and marketing, we planned and developed the website as a whole.

Beyond Booking — A Place to Encounter Culture

Our vision for Japonistique was never simply to create a website for searching and booking cultural experiences.

Rather than presenting only the most visually striking aspects of Japanese culture, we seek to convey with care the skills inherited by each artisan, the philosophy that lies behind them, and their relationship with materials and place.

Our aim is to create a place where international visitors seeking a deeper encounter with Japanese culture can meet the artisans who sustain it, in a way that is natural and sustainable for both.

We continue to speak with each artisan and organisation individually and with care, gradually expanding the artisans and cultural experiences featured on Japonistique.

Our Support

  • Defining the purpose and concept of each experience
  • Individual conversations with artisans and organisations
  • Articulating each experience and its cultural context
  • Brand development
  • Website strategy, information architecture and development
  • Marketing and communications support

Case Study 02 | Carrying the Beauty of Kimono into the Future, in a New Form

ALISA Kimono Robe

ALISA Kimono Robe is an initiative in which skilled artisans transform kimono into robes, carrying their beauty into the future in a new form.

Rather than confining kimono to traditional ways of wearing them, the initiative reimagines them as pieces that can be worn in contemporary life, allowing their beauty to reach people who may previously have had little opportunity to encounter kimono.

kototama helped clarify the vision and values at the heart of the initiative, and supported its website strategy and development, branding and marketing.

Understanding Your Body, and Discovering How Best to Move

Attending to Mind and Body

We express what lies within us through more than words alone.

The way we stand.
The way we walk.
The way we breathe.
The way we move our hands.

The body is the essential foundation for how we move through everyday life and express ourselves.

Yet we may experience difficulty in movement or physical discomfort without ever becoming aware of our habitual patterns or the ways in which we use our bodies.

At kototama, we offer local communities bodywork informed by the principles of traditional Japanese martial arts, alongside yoga and Pilates classes.

Rather than forcing the body to perform movements that do not come naturally, we begin by understanding its present condition and individual characteristics. From there, we explore ways of moving and using the body that are suited to each person.

Bodywork Informed by Traditional Japanese Martial Arts

Drawing upon ways of using the body passed down through traditional Japanese martial arts — including the principle of moving without relying on muscular strength alone — we provide bodywork tailored to each individual’s condition.

Sessions are currently offered approximately once a week, with more than 300 treatments provided to date.

Online Yoga & Pilates Classes

To enable people to continue attending to their bodies wherever they may be, we offer online yoga and Pilates classes three times a week.

Yoga & Pilates in the Local Community

To make these practices readily accessible to local residents, we hold yoga and Pilates classes at community facilities approximately twice a month.

Experience in Yoga and Pilates

The Representative Director leading this work has taught yoga and Pilates to several thousand people to date.

Rather than imposing a prescribed form, the teaching is tailored to each person’s physical condition and experience, creating time and space for them to develop a deeper understanding of their own body.
